LET’S HYGGE SEPTEMBER 2026
[definition of hygge]
is the art of creating joy in everyday life — a feeling of comfort, closeness, and ease, found in candlelight, shared meals, creative rituals, and the quiet moments that make us feel at home. Rooted in Scandinavian traditions, hygge is about slowing down, being present, and finding beauty in the simple things.
Coming home to Australia after spending the winter months in Denmark means arriving just as spring is beginning. The days are getting warmer, the wattle is flowering and there is new life everywhere.
At our country place, we were greeted by five newly born little goat kids. During the weekend, another six arrived — three sets of twins! It was such a joyful welcome home.
I am always amazed by how instinctively the mother goats know exactly what to do. They are incredibly patient and gentle with their little ones. I have spent hours sitting in the paddock amongst them, slowly getting to know all the new little personalities.
The wattle is also in full bloom at the moment. I have been picking branches on my morning walks through the bush, bringing them inside and making a simple wreath for the front door. I love using whatever is growing around me to decorate the house.
Further down in this month’s journal, I am sharing a simple recipe for the pantry, some energising music and a wonderful film I watched on my way back to Australia.
I wish you a lovely month of September filled with seasonal flowers, delicious additions to the pantry and lots of hygge.
PICKLED MUSTARD SEEDS
– recipe from a dear Danish friend Anette Eckmann
An easy and delicious condiment that works beautifully with all kinds of sandwiches, tartlets and salads.
1 GLASS
INGREDIENTS
40 g mustard seeds
100 ml organic apple cider vinegar
2 tbsp raw sugar
½ tsp fine salt
3 black peppercorns
1 bay leaf
- Place all the ingredients in a small saucepan.
- Heat over medium-high heat.
- Once the pickling liquid comes to a boil, reduce the heat to low.
- Let the mustard seeds simmer for about 8-12 minutes.
- Transfer the pickled mustard seeds to a sterilised, airtight jar.
- Leave to cool and use immediately, or store in the refrigerator.
WATTLE FLOWERS & WREATHS
Wherever I am, I love bringing a little of the surrounding landscape indoors. A handful of wildflowers, a beautiful branch or a simple bunch of wattle gathered on a morning walk can instantly make a space feel like home. Wattle, Australia’s national flower, is particularly special to me — its delicate scent brings back memories of living in Italy as a young girl, where I first discovered it. Now, living in Australia, I love that there are so many different varieties growing around us. This spring I have been gathering the first flowering branches for simple bouquets and wreaths — a lovely way to bring the season inside.
On my flight back to Australia, I watched Sentimental Value and I absolutely loved it. It is a beautifully understated and moving story about two sisters reconnecting with their estranged father. The acting, the story, the family dynamics and the quiet tone of the film really resonated with me. It has also received extraordinary international recognition, including the Grand Prix at Cannes, six European Film Awards, a Golden Globe, a BAFTA and, most impressively, the 2026 Oscar for Best International Feature Film. The film can be watched on Apple TV.
I Follow Rivers by Swedish singer Lykke Li brings back happy memories of Copenhagen this summer, where I heard it playing from the decorated trucks filled with newly graduated students singing, dancing and celebrating as they drove through the city. It is a wonderful Danish tradition, with the trucks stopping at each student’s home, where family and friends are waiting with drinks and snacks before they continue on to the next celebration. Now, whenever I hear the song, it takes me straight back to those joyful summer days in Copenhagen. You can hear it hear on Apple Music , Spotify or YouTube
