LET’S HYGGE JULY 2026
[definition of hygge]
is the art of creating joy in everyday life — a feeling of comfort, closeness, and ease, found in candlelight, shared meals, creative rituals, and the quiet moments that make us feel at home. Rooted in Scandinavian traditions, hygge is about slowing down, being present, and finding beauty in the simple things.
Add a little hygge to each month
This month’s journal is inspired by my visit to 3daysofdesign in Copenhagen and its beautiful motto: “Make This Moment Matter.”
One of the things I love most about 3daysofdesign is that it is open to everyone and completely free. Across Copenhagen, design companies welcome visitors into their studios, workshops, and showrooms, offering a rare opportunity to look beyond the finished products and discover the craftsmanship, creativity, and stories behind them.
The phrase Make This Moment Matter stayed with me long after the event ended and became a gentle reminder throughout my Scandinavian journey—to slow down, be present, and embrace meaningful moments. Whether through design, nature, shared meals, creativity, or conversation, it is often these simple experiences that enrich our lives the most.
In this edition, I share a selection of inspiring people, places, and companies that reminded me of the value of thoughtful design, craftsmanship, and human connection.
TOP 5 HIGHLIGHTS FROM 3 DAYS OF DESIGN COPENHAGEN
1. UMAGE
UMAGE continues to impress with its thoughtful blend of beautiful Scandinavian design, sustainability, and innovation. Known for its elegant lighting and furniture collections, the company also hosted a series of engaging talks during 3daysofdesign, exploring topics such as artificial intelligence and the future of social media. It was inspiring to see a design company looking beyond products and actively engaging in conversations about the changing world around us.
Founded in Copenhagen in 1942, Bergs Potter has been creating beautiful terracotta pots for generations. Visiting their exhibition during 3daysofdesign felt especially meaningful, as it reminded me of the iconic Copenhagen pot I bought for my first apartment in Copenhagen many years ago — and still treasure today in Sydney. Their beautifully curated display was a celebration of both heritage and enduring design.
3. FILE UNDER POP I SONJA FERLOV MANCOBA
One of the highlights of 3daysofdesign was attending a talk hosted by File Under Pop in collaboration with gallerist Mikael Andersen about the remarkable Danish sculptor Sonja Ferlov Mancoba. Surrounded by a selection of her powerful sculptures, it was fascinating to learn more about her artistic vision and enduring influence on Danish art and design. The discussion also offered a glimpse into the exciting plans for a new museum dedicated to her work on the island of Bornholm, ensuring that her legacy will continue to inspire future generations.
Carl Hansen & Søn unveiled the new OS111 Begonya Pendant by Øivind Slaatto. Inspired by the geometry and patterns of nature, the lamp explores the relationship between light, form and material. As Slaatto explains:
“I do not feel that I invented the Begonya pendant. Nature made it. I simply observed something and translated it into a lamp.”
Seeing the lamp illuminated was beautiful, but witnessing the craftsmanship behind its intricate folded structure was even more inspiring. I have a feeling we are witnessing the birth of another Danish lighting icon.
5. GEORG JENSEN I SECRET GARDEN
Georg Jensen had transformed Højbro Plads opposite its flagship store into a beautiful Secret Garden celebrating the launch of its new Georg Jensen at Play collection. Inspired by the joy of traditional analogue games, the collection reimagined classic pastimes through exceptional craftsmanship, featuring silver and stone dice, a woodland-inspired Mikado set, a spinning top, a snail whistle, a yo-yo, and a new interpretation of the traditional Scandinavian Kubb game. The exhibition was a refreshing reminder of the value of slowing down, spending time together, and rediscovering the simple pleasure of play. Image credit: Courtesy Georg Jensen

Wishing you a gentle July, with time to enjoy the season and hygge.
I was delighted to discover that TEKLA had created little lavender pillows as gifts for visitors. Last year, I made similar lavender sachets for family and friends, so it was lovely to see this simple Scandinavian tradition celebrated in such a thoughtful way. You can find my lavender pillow tutorial here.
