[definition of hygge]

is the art of creating joy in everyday life — a feeling of comfort, closeness, and ease, found in candlelight, shared meals, creative rituals, and the quiet moments that make us feel at home.

Add a little hygge to each month

April arrives with a sense of renewal — a time for fresh beginnings, creative rituals, and slower moments at home. This month, I share a small painting project, handmade paper Easter eggs, a simple Bircher muesli recipe, a glimpse into Denmark’s Next Classic, and something new from my studio.

With our oldest son moving out, the house has shifted quietly. In that change, I’ve gained a room of my own — a peaceful nook for analogue work, with freshly painted floorboards and soft light. A gentle reminder of how something as simple as paint can transform both a space and the feeling within it.

A Room of My Own

An empty nest — with both sons now moved out of their childhood home. Rooms once filled with everyday life are being reimagined, becoming guest spaces while still holding their stories.

In this change, I’ve gained something unexpected — a room of my own. We removed the old carpet, and I painted the floorboards, creating a calm and quiet space for my analogue work. A small sanctuary within the home, and something I truly cherish.

THINGS TO COOK, CREATE AND CELEBRATE FOR EASTER

In the Let’s Hygge Easter eBook, I share the preparations, celebrations, and traditions that shape my Easter each year. It is a blend of Danish traditions, heirloom recipes, handmade decorations, and guidance on creating a seasonal natural wreath, alongside new inspirations gathered since making Australia home.

As Easter approaches, I find myself drawn to simple, tactile rituals. Evenings have been spent quietly cutting and gluing, building a small collection of paper Easter eggs in soft, layered patterns. Each one feels like a little piece of calm.

These eggs can be hung on olive branches or gathered into a simple arrangement at home — a gentle way to mark the season. I’ll also be hosting a workshop to share this process, and if you feel inspired to create your own, you can find the full instructions in my let’s hygge Easter eBook, along with ideas for celebrating the season.

BIRCHEN MUSLI

A simple, nourishing start to the day! This recipe was given to me by the chef at Sofitel in Mauritius more than 10 years ago, when we attended the wedding of dear friends. It was my first time tasting Bircher muesli, and I have made it many times since. The chef, Jacques Ledu, was kind enough to share his recipe with me — a small gesture I have always treasured.

Serves 4 persons

INGREDIENTS
200 g rolled oats
200 ml yogurt
2 tbsp honey
200 ml apple juice
40 g hazelnuts
2 apple
handful fresh mint leaves

Gently roast the oats in the oven at 180°C for around 15 minutes, then allow them to cool completely.

Dice the apple and roughly chop the hazelnuts. Finely chop the mint.

In a bowl, combine the yogurt, honey, apple juice, apple and mint. Stir through the roasted oats and hazelnuts.

Let the mixture rest for a little while before serving, allowing the flavours to soften and come together.

The bircher muesli will keep beautifully in the fridge for up to 3 days.

Lately, I’ve been captivated by Danmarks Næste Klassiker (Denmark’s Next Classic). Now in its seventh season, the program offers a beautiful insight into the creative process. I always find it inspiring to watch how designers think, shape ideas, and bring concepts to life.

The show challenges top designers to create future furniture classics — chairs, lamps, tables — pushing the boundaries of aesthetics, craftsmanship, and functionality. A jury of experts evaluates their designs, ultimately crowning a winner. Though Danmarks Næste Klassiker is in Danish, it’s so visually engaging that language hardly matters! You can watch it for free here.

Something from my studio

A glimpse into my creative work and collaborations. A recent project close to my heart has been the creative direction for DK Design Kitchens — a Sydney-based Kitchen studio with Scandinavian roots.

I create a calm and cohesive visual universe, from branding and styling photography to website, content, and printed materials — all designed to reflect their philosophy of kitchens made to last and to be lived in.

“Kristine has an exceptional ability to translate who we are into a visual language that feels both refined and true to our Scandinavian heritage.”  Founder Michael Gamborg

Please feel free to reach out to discuss your project.
