LET’S HYGGE JUNE 2024
[definition of hygge]
a quality of cosiness and comfortable living that engenders a feeling of contentment and well-being (regarded as a defining characteristic of Danish culture).
Add a little hygge to each month
I hope this little greeting finds you well. I am writing this in the heat of the fireplace, to the lovely tones of Mozart with the rain pouring down outside. Watching the film “Amadeus”, about the life of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, has inspired me to listen to his music.
This weather calls for hygge. I have lit the candles and decided to make scones later. I will share my simple recipe with you, if you feel like baking something too. Also I will decorate some matchboxes – below I will show you how!
Our goats are expecting and we curiously watching their bellies grow. Recently we have had two wild Billy (male) goats jump the fence and joined our pack of goats. It’s a joy to watch these beautiful, cheerful animals.
I wish you a lovely month of June with cozy projects and hygge!
DECORATED MATCHBOXES
Now that it is the season for getting the fireplaces going, I have decided to make another batch of decorative matchboxes. It’s an easy and very cosy project. These small beauties leaves me with a lot of joy seeing them around the house. They are make a sweet little gift, if you know someone that would appreciate, a beautiful, decorated matchbox. My paper is from William Morris, whose work I adore.
ALL YOUR NEED
a scissor
a glue stick
pretty paper
matchboxes
HOMEMADE SCONES WITH JAM AND WHIPPED CREAM
The scone recipe was given to me by a mother from school many years ago. It’s easy and requires very few ingredients, that you may have in your fridge already. Enjoy!
ALL YOU NEED
For 10-12 scones
2 cups of self-raising flour
25 g butter, in cubes
a pinch of salt
3/4 cup milk
METHOD
Set oven to 220°. Rub butter into flour and salt. Add milk. Add a bit more milk, if required. Turn into a lightly floured board and knead until smooth.
Roll out to 2 cm thick and cut into 10-12 pieces using a glass of 6 cm in diameter. Bake 10-15 minutes until golden. Leave to cool a bit. Half and serve with jam and whipped cream.
I recently watched the film “Amadeus” on Netflix, which beautifully portrays the life and music of composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Despite being 30 years old, the film is a timeless masterpiece well worth watching. The film was directed by Miloš Forman (1932-2018), who was a Czech-American film director, screenwriter, actor, and professor. The film achieved internationally recognition and won eight awards at the Oscars . If you haven’t seen it yet, I highly recommend checking it out. You can view the trailer here or watch it on Netflix:
Inspired by the film “Amadeus” I have been listening to Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 21 written in 1785. It’s known to be one of his greatest works. I loved, how music can transform the atmosphere of the room. I have been playing Mozart’s work on repeat all weekend. His tones add a sparkle to the cold and dark nights, that feels so good and comforting. Have a listen on Spotify, Apple Music or YouTube.
Walking my usual route in the bush, I was thinking there would be nothing to pick, as autumn has left its mark, but then I spotted the steadfast Wattle. It surprises me every year with its bright yellow stars lighting up everything around it. I came home with my hands full of blooming, wattle stars ready to brighten the room. Can’t wait for their beautiful scents to spread.
