LET’S HYGGE July 2025
[definition of hygge]
a quality of cosiness and comfortable living that engenders a feeling of contentment and well-being (regarded as a defining characteristic of Danish culture).
Add a little hygge to each month
Hej fra Danmark!
A postcard to you from beautiful Denmark, where I’m combining work and holiday. Reconnecting with my roots, soaking up the Danish design aesthetic, and enjoying the longer days and brighter nights!
While in Copenhagen, I also have had the chance to attend 3 Days of Design – and what a dream! Three heavenly days filled with creativity, inspiration, and the kind of effortless style only Denmark can deliver. If you’re even a little bit interested in design and aesthetics, this is the event to bookmark. Below I will share my 5 highlights.
One exciting update from my studio: I have just sent the 6th Valdemarsro cookbook to print! This latest volume is a vegetarian cookbook, packed with wholesome, flavour-filled recipes to inspire your everyday meals. The book is (for now) only available in Danish. You can pre-order VALDEMARSRO VEGETAR AFTENSMAD – it’s a beautiful one, if I may say so.
Along the way, I’ve gathered inspiration not just from design and food, but also from culture – so I’m sharing a brilliant Danish series recommendation and a song that captures the feeling of home, no matter where you are.
Tak for nu – and thank you, as always, for following along. I wish you an inspiring month of July
TOP 5 HIGHLIGHTS FROM 3 DAYS OF DESIGN COPENHAGEN
1. ROYAL COPENHAGEN
Stepping into the world of Royal Copenhagen felt like entering a living piece of Danish heritage. Their signature porcelain – delicate, hand-painted, and deeply traditional – was showcased in stunning new ways. I even took part in their free workshop, painting a plate that will be used in their café – a beautiful, hands-on way to connect with their iconic craft.
2. CARL HANSEN & SØN
A masterclass in craftsmanship and simplicity. Carl Hansen & Søn continues to honour Danish design icons like Hans J. Wegner with timeless pieces that radiate calm, intention, and elegance. Their space was a quiet celebration of form, function, and fine woodwork. And their free poster handout! Next-level merchandise: 4 beautifully designed posters rolled in a sleek tube, with a cotton ribbon attached so you could carry it like a bag – functional, elegant, and so thoughtfully done you’ll want to frame them the moment you get home.
3. TEKLA
Tekla’s world is soft, intentional, and serene. Their new collection of Broderie Anglaise was presented in the Royal Danish Academy, with breezy curtains blowing in through open windows overlooking the tranquil King’s Square. For a moment, it felt like stepping into a dream – light, airy, and timeless.
4. NUURA
Nuura’s lighting created a poetic atmosphere I’ve truly never experienced before. Every fixture felt like a sculptural whisper of light – elevating the room with softness and soul. Their pieces aren’t just lighting – they’re emotion, captured in form and glow.
5. BRDR. KRÜGER
This family-run house is a beautiful example of design storytelling. They had a brilliant display showing how one of their iconic chairs assembles and stacks like a sculptural installation – pure craftsmanship in motion. It was a powerful reminder that great design lives at the intersection of function and art.
A must-watch Danish Netflix series, The Secrets We Keep, by one of my favourite directors, Per Fly – subtle, moving, and unmistakably Scandinavian. Across its six episodes, the story unfolds at a gentle Nordic pace – layering mystery, ethical dilemmas, and nuance. Grab a blanket, a warm drink, and let the whispers of privilege, prejudice, and power slowly unfold. You can watch on here.
Novembervej by Nik & Jay – a song that always stirs something in me. It’s a tribute to that deep sense of belonging to Denmark, no matter where in the world you are. This duo is a long-time crush, and if I ever became a millionaire, I would fly them to Sydney to play. You can listen to it here: Spotify, Apple Music or YouTube
